I am not sure to which year this strange German tradition dates back. You can bet that at least 30% of Germans will watch every year again the old sketch "Dinner For One". At least 3 broadcast stations show it. Every year again. This sketch by Lauri Wylie from 1963 is starring Freddie Frinton and May Warden speaking pure British English. Even those Germans who do not actually speak English know the sketch by heart.
Funny: I have never met an Englishman who has heard about it, but all Germans believe that the English know it as well.
